TREX LATTICE INSTALLATION GUIDE
Guidance for a successful installation with cPVC lattice
If you can install wood lattice, you can install low-maintenance cPVC lattice. No special skills or tools are required - just a few considerations when working with this superior sheet material to ensure fewer callbacks for contractors and a long low-maintenance life for homeowners.
With Trex Lattice you won't have to worry about rot, insect infestation, or annual painting or staining to keep your lattice looking great.
For safety, a dust mask and safety glasses should always be worn when working with cPVC lattice.
Cutting
Cellular PVC lattice can be cut using the same blades as wood. It shouldn’t be cut with plywood or metal cutting blades. If the blade is creating too much friction or if the sheet isn’t properly supported, rough edges or uneven cuts may occur.
Drilling
Standard wood drill bits should be used. Do not use drill bits made for rigid PVC.
Routing
Routing should be done with a sharp, carbide-tipped bit.
Fastening
Fasteners should penetrate at least 1” into a solid wood substrate. Fastener should be at least ¾” from the edge of a sheet, but no further than 2”. Fastener heads should be flush with the lattice surface or slightly countersunk. Lattice sheets should be fastened with stainless steel screws or nails to prevent corrosion or the Cortex hidden fastening system. Staples, brads, wire nails, fine-thread wood screws or ring-shank fasteners are not recommended.
Sheets ¾” thick or greater should be fastened a maximum of 16” on center horizontally and 12” on center vertically.
Sheets ½” thick or less should be fastened a maximum of 12” on center horizontally and 6” on center vertically.
Expansion and Contraction
Cellular PVC contracts in cold temperatures and expands in heat. Southern exposures receive more light, causing greater expansion and contraction. Additional fasteners may be required.
Expansion gaps of ¼” are recommended around the perimeter of all lattice sheets.
It is best to allow the PVC to acclimate to the outside temperature before installing, and ideal to install when the outside temperature is 60-70˚F. Predrilling may be necessary in temperatures below 40˚F.
Sealants and Adhesives
Sealants and adhesives alone are never enough to fasten lattice sheets. Silicone adhesives should not be used.
Filling Nail Holes
Nail holes should be filled with sealant designed for PVC products. Do not use silicone caulk. Once the sealant has set up, the hole should be sanded for a smooth finish.
Painting
Painting cellular PVC isn’t required.
Sheets may be painted on site - use a 100% acrylic latex paint specifically designed to work with vinyl products. The surface of the trim should be clean and free of debris like dirt, oil, mold or mildew. An airless sprayer or paint gun system gives the most consistent finish. A roller or brush may also be used.
Storage and Handling
Unpainted cPVC should be handled with care to avoid damage. It should be stored on a level surface before installation and protected from excessive heat. If stored outside, the trim should be covered with a tarp to keep it clean and protected.
Handle materials so as to protect materials, coatings, and finishes during transportation and installation to prevent damage or staining.
Cleaning
If the trim becomes dirty or stained, it can be cleaned with a mild soap and water mixture and a soft bristle brush.
It is the responsibility of the installer to meet or exceed all code and safety requirements, and to obtain all required building permits. These instructions are only a guide, and may not address every circumstance. The installer should determine and implement appropriate installation techniques for each situation. Structureworks shall not be held liable for improper or unsafe installations.
